Jianlan (Masha) Ma
Masha is a law clerk in the firm’s Transaction team, specializing in regulatory compliance and cross-border transactions across multiple sectors, with a focus on data privacy, export control, CFIUS, and anti-corruption/FCPA. She has significant experience advising multinational corporations on complex regulatory issues, with a particular emphasis on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI).
Before joining the firm, Masha served as Legal Counsel for a leading U.S. technology company, where she advised AI/ML and software teams on data privacy, cybersecurity, and technology export regulations. She played a key role in ensuring compliance with Chinese and global regulations while supporting the company's AI-driven projects. Prior to this, Masha was an associate at a top Chinese law firm, where she advised high-profile technology and e-commerce companies on compliance matters related to data privacy, export control, and anti-corruption/FCPA. She helped multinational clients develop compliance systems under both the GDPR and China’s Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL).
In addition to her legal expertise, Masha has been actively involved in AI governance. At Harvard Law School, she collaborated with the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society on AI safety and policy initiatives and served as a policy fellow with the Harvard AI Safety Team, focusing on the intersection of AI technology and regulatory frameworks.
Masha’s diverse experience in both in-house and private practice roles provides her with a unique perspective, enabling her to guide clients through complex cross-border legal challenges with practical, business-focused solutions.
